Workspaces: create, switch, rename and delete

Everything you make in Briks lives in a workspace: the projects, the people who work on them, the media library, your skills, the plan and the credits. This page shows how to create a workspace, move between the ones you belong to, rename one, move projects across and delete a workspace you no longer need.

What a workspace holds

Think of a workspace as a shared office for one team or one client. Everyone in it sees the same projects and spends from the same credit balance, and each person has a role that decides what they can change. You can belong to several workspaces at once, each with a different role.

Your own account (your name, email and password) sits outside every workspace and is the same in all of them. That lives on your profile.

Create a workspace

Make a new workspace

  1. Open the workspace switcher

    Where: Top of the sidebar

Click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar. Under the name you see the plan and your role in it, for example Free plan · Owner. A list of every workspace you belong to opens, with a tick beside the one in use.

  2. Choose Create workspace

    Where: Workspace switcher

It sits at the foot of the list. A small window called Create a workspace opens.

  3. Name it

    Where: Create a workspace

Type a Workspace name of 2 to 50 characters. Use something you will recognise at a glance in the list, such as the client's business name.

  4. Create it

    Where: Create a workspace

Choose Create workspace. Briks makes the workspace, makes you its Owner and opens Home inside it. The sidebar now shows its name, and the credits bar shows its own balance.

One person can own up to 10 workspaces. At the limit, Briks says: "You own 10 workspaces, the most one person can. Delete one you no longer use first." The count is of workspaces you created and are still an Owner of, so handing one to a client and leaving it, or taking another role there, frees a place. Workspaces you were invited into do not count.

Switch between workspaces

Click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar and pick another from the list. Each row shows your role and the plan, such as Editor · Pro plan. The studio reloads on Home in the workspace you chose, and from then on the sidebar, the credits bar, Members, Billing and Settings all belong to that workspace.

You rarely need to switch by hand to open a project. If you follow a link to a project in another of your workspaces, Briks switches to that workspace for you first, so a teammate's link always opens with the right credits and the right role.

Rename a workspace

  1. Open Settings

    Where: Sidebar

Under the Workspace heading in the sidebar, choose Settings. The top of the page shows the workspace's name and the email you are signed in with.

  2. Change the name

    Where: Settings

In the Workspace group, edit Workspace name. It needs at least two characters.

  3. Save

    Where: Settings

Choose Save under the name. Saved shows at the foot of the window, and the new name appears in the sidebar and in everyone else's workspace list.

Only Owners and Admins can change settings. Editors and Viewers can open the page and read it, and see the line "An Owner or Admin changes these settings."

Move a project to another workspace

Projects can change workspace without being rebuilt. You need to be an Owner or Admin in the workspace the project is in now, and an Editor, Admin or Owner in the one it is going to.

  1. Find Move to another workspace

    Where: Settings, General

Open the project, then its Settings tab, which opens on General. Further down the page, a card holds Duplicate, Save as template and Move to another workspace. The same choice is in the ••• menu on the project's row in Projects. If you are not an Editor or above in any other workspace, the button is greyed out and the card says so.

  2. Pick where it goes

    Where: Move dialog

Choose Move project, then pick the workspace in Move to. The window lists what moves with the project and what stays behind.

  3. Move it

    Where: Move dialog

Choose Move to followed by the workspace's name. The project opens in its new home, on its settings page.

Leave or delete a workspace

Both live in the Danger zone at the foot of Settings. Each button says plainly why it is greyed out when it cannot be used.

  • Leave workspace is open to everyone. You lose access to its projects at once, and an Admin can invite you back. You cannot leave if you are its only Owner ("make someone else an Owner in Members first") or if it is your only workspace ("Create another first").
  • Delete workspace is for Owners only. The workspace must hold no projects, so move or delete them first, and it cannot be your only workspace. To confirm, type the workspace's name exactly as it appears.

Example: an agency with a workspace per client

How one agency sets it upNorthgate Design, a Bristol agency with six clients

Northgate keeps its own workspace for pitches and its own site, and creates one workspace per client: Harbour Physio, Leith Sourdough, Calder Joinery and so on. Each client's projects, form messages, media and credits stay in their own place, so a picture uploaded for the joinery never turns up in the bakery's library. The two designers are Editors in every client workspace and the studio lead is the Owner. The physio clinic's practice manager is a Viewer in hers, so she can look at visitors and previews without changing anything.

Work never crosses between clients, everyone sees only the projects they should, and when a client takes the site on, the agency makes them the Owner of their workspace. See Handing a site to a client.

Do I pay for each person in a workspace?

No. There are no seat fees: the plan includes its members, 3 on Pro, 10 on Studio and 25 on Agency, you included. Free and Starter are for the owner alone.

Can I move credits from one workspace to another?

Not in the studio. Each workspace has its own balance, which its projects spend from.

I deleted my first workspace. Why does my new one have no credits?

Free credits come once per person, with the first workspace they own. They do not come back with a new one.

Why can I not delete a workspace?

It still holds projects, it is your only workspace, or you are not one of its Owners. The Delete workspace row says which.
