# Website builder for potters and makers

A maker's website does two jobs at once. It shows the work well enough that people want to hold it, and it tells them how to get it: buy a piece, book a workshop or visit the studio. Describe what you make and how you sell, and Briks plans the pages, builds them and publishes your site.

Below are templates you can start from, the pages a maker's site usually needs, and a brief to rework with your own story.

Start with 50 free credits. No card needed.

## The pages a potter's or maker's website needs

Most makers sell in three or four ways at once, and the site has to make each one clear. Tick the pages that fit and the sitemap redraws. Briks asks the same question before it builds.

**Your sitemap** 5 pages

**Home**/

**The work**/work **How to buy**/buy **Workshops**/workshops **The studio**/studio

Briks asks which pages you want before it builds, with Decide for me if you would rather it chose. What you tick here goes into the example brief below.

## An example brief for a pottery website

Change the details to your own and use it as your starting point. The pages line follows what you ticked above.

Kiln Lane Ceramics is a one-person pottery studio in Totnes, Devon, run by Hannah Price since 2017. I make wheel-thrown stoneware for everyday use: mugs, bowls, plates and jugs in three glazes, sea green, oatmeal and iron black.

I sell at the studio on Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm, at two Devon markets a month, and by email for anything in stock. I also take commissions for tableware sets, with a twelve-week lead time.

I teach a beginners' wheel workshop on the first Sunday of each month, 10am to 3pm, for six people, £95 including clay, firing and glazing. Pots are ready to collect four weeks later.

The site should feel calm and earthy, with plenty of space around photographs of the work, and make it clear how to buy, how to book a workshop and how to find the studio.

**Pages:** Home, The work, How to buy, Workshops, The studio.

Use this brief opens sign-up, then a new project with these words filled in. Change anything before you build.

### Why it is written this way

- Say exactly how people buy. 'By email for pieces in stock' is a clear instruction; 'available to purchase' is not.
- Give workshop dates, sizes and prices. Those are the details people need before they enquire.
- Name your glazes and materials. The words you use about your work are the words buyers search for.
- Describe the feel. Calm and earthy, or bright and playful: it guides colour, type and spacing.

## How Briks builds a maker's website

Each step is something Briks does today. Follow a link for the details of each feature, including whether it needs a plan or a switch.

1. **Describe your work**

Write what you make, from what, how you sell it and where your studio is. Briks asks which pages you want before it builds, and what your brief left open, like whether workshops take bookings or enquiries.

[Questions before building *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/questions-before-building)

2. **Pick a look, or show one**

Switch on Pick a look to choose from three looks set with your own opening words, or add a site you like and Briks builds in its spirit instead.

[Pick a look *Switch it on*](https://briks.dev/features/pick-a-look)

3. **Use your own photographs**

Upload photographs and videos to the workspace's media library and pick them from the prompt box. Replace a picture without asking for a rebuild.

   [Media library *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/media-library)

4. **Workshop and commission enquiries**

Forms keep every entry in the studio, and once your site is in production each one is emailed to you.

[Forms that keep every entry *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/forms)

5. **Readable on every screen**

Soft glazes make for soft palettes. Briks checks that words stay readable against their backgrounds in the code, and on the live page at desktop and phone after the first publish, with a repair if they are not.

[Checks before publishing *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/contrast-checks)

6. **New pieces in a sentence**

After a kiln opening, tell Briks what is new in the studio chat. It builds and publishes the change, and every change is a version you can undo.

[Changes in plain words *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/changes-in-plain-words)

## Advice for a maker's website that sells the work

- **Photograph pieces in use**

A mug on a plain background shows the glaze; a mug on a kitchen table with a hand round it sells it. Use both: clean shots for the detail, pieces in use for the feeling.

- **Make how to buy the clearest thing on the site**

Handmade work is often sold several ways at once. List them in one place, in the order you prefer to sell, and link to that page from every piece.

- **Treat workshops as a product**

A workshop page needs the same care as a piece: the date, the length, what people make, what they take home and when. Clear details mean fewer emails before each booking.

- **Write care notes**

Dishwasher? Oven? A short care note on each piece answers the question buyers do not like to ask, and it shows you know your materials.

## Questions from potters and makers

### Can I sell my pottery online with Briks?

Yes. Your site can take one-time payments through your own processor for workshop places and pieces, and when you ask, Briks builds shipping for posted pieces into the site. Or take orders by email, phone or a form that keeps each entry, or link to the online shop you already use.

### Can I use my own photographs?

Yes. Upload pictures and videos to your workspace's media library and use them from any project's prompt box. You can replace a picture without asking for a rebuild.

### Can people book a workshop through the site?

Yes. Briks builds booking forms that keep every entry in the studio and email each one to you once the site is in production. Connect your own payment processor in Project settings and people can pay for their place when they book.

### Will it look handmade rather than templated?

Briks plans a design for your studio from your brief. If you want a say first, switch on Pick a look and choose from three, or add a site you like and it builds in its spirit.
