# Website builder for founders

When you are starting something, the website is one of fifty jobs, and it is usually the one that waits. Briks turns a written brief into a planned, built and published website, app or dashboard, so you can put the idea in front of people this week and change it as you learn.

Below are templates you can start from, the pages a first site usually needs, and a brief written the way a founder would write one.

Start with 50 free credits. No card needed.

Design studio Halden Studio is an independent design studio in Bristol, England, founded in 2016 by Mara Halden. The opening line of the brief behind **Design Studio**, a website template by the Briks team [Open the Design Studio template](https://briks.dev/templates/design-studio)

## The pages a first startup website needs

Fewer than you think. Tick the pages that fit your idea and the sitemap redraws. Briks asks the same question before it builds, and your choice goes into the brief further down.

**Your sitemap** 5 pages

**Home**/

**Product**/product **Pricing**/pricing **Waitlist**/join **Contact**/contact

Briks asks which pages you want before it builds, with Decide for me if you would rather it chose. What you tick here goes into the example brief below.

## An example brief for a startup website

Change the details to your own and use it as your starting point. The pages line follows what you ticked above.

Tidebook is a new app for small sailing clubs to manage boat bookings, crew lists and race results. We are two founders in Southampton, a sailor and a developer, and we start a pilot with three clubs on the south coast in the spring.

For now we need a website, not the app: what Tidebook does, who it is for, a pricing page with a pilot price of £39 a month per club, and a waitlist form that asks for the club's name, its size and the contact's role.

Our visitors are club secretaries and volunteers, many of them retired, who are tired of spreadsheets and group chats. The words should be plain and friendly, with no jargon.

The site should feel fresh and coastal without clichés: clean, lots of white, one strong colour.

**Pages:** Home, Product, Pricing, Waitlist, Contact.

Use this brief opens sign-up, then a new project with these words filled in. Change anything before you build.

### Why it is written this way

- Say what you need now, not eventually. 'A website, not the app' keeps the first build focused.
- Name your visitor precisely. 'Club secretaries, many of them retired' shapes every sentence on the site.
- Put a number on pricing, even a pilot one. Visitors use it to decide whether you are for them.
- Say what the form should ask. A waitlist with the right three questions is a list of interviews.

## How Briks takes an idea to a live site

Each step is something Briks does today. Follow a link for the details of each feature, including whether it needs a plan or a switch.

1. **Write the brief, answer the questions**

Describe the business, who it is for and what you want people to do. Before building, Briks asks which pages you want and anything your brief left open. Not sure yet? Choose Decide for me.

[Questions before building *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/questions-before-building)

2. **Point at a site you like**

Add a site whose feel you want, with screenshots if you have them. Briks reads its layout, spacing, type and motion, and builds yours in that spirit with your own words.

[Build from a site you like *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/build-from-sites-you-like)

3. **Checked before anyone sees it**

Contrast is checked in the code before publishing, every page you chose is in the menu, and apps are read for keys written into files, writes with no limit and unsafe queries.

[Checks before publishing *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/contrast-checks)

4. **A preview first, then production**

The first publish goes to its own briks.live address, kept out of search while you look it over. Publish to production when you are ready: a launch check runs first, including links that go nowhere.

[Hosting and your domain *Domains on paid plans*](https://briks.dev/features/hosting-and-domains)

5. **Change it as you learn**

Rewrite the pitch, add a pricing page, drop a feature. Type it in the studio chat and Briks builds and publishes it. Questions about your site are answered without a build.

[Changes in plain words *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/changes-in-plain-words)

6. **Test what you are unsure about**

Test a saved version against the live one, split from 5 to 95 percent, and count form entries, taps on your phone or email, and clicks on the main action.

   [A/B testing *On every plan*](https://briks.dev/features/ab-testing)

7. **Your code and records, open to you**

Browse the code written for your site, and on a paid plan download it as a zip and your records as JSON or CSV whenever you like.

## Advice for a first website that earns its keep

- **Launch the smallest true site**

A home page, a pricing page and a way to get in touch is enough to start conversations. Every page you add because other startups have one is a page you have to keep true.

- **Write for one person**

Pick the person most likely to buy first and write every page to them. A site for 'businesses of all sizes' speaks to nobody in particular, and nobody remembers it.

- **Measure one thing**

Decide what a good visit looks like, a waitlist entry or a call booked, and watch that. Analytics and A/B tests help most when you know what you are counting.

- **Only say what you can stand behind**

Logos of companies that have not bought, numbers you rounded up, reviews from friends: early visitors check, and trust is hard to win back. Say what is true today and let it grow.

## Questions from founders

### Can Briks build an app, not just a website?

Yes. Briks plans, builds, checks and publishes websites, apps and dashboards from a written brief, and apps that store data get their own database. Apps can give their users accounts and take one-time payments and subscriptions through your own processor.

### How much does it cost to start?

Starting is free, with 50 credits at sign-up, then 5 a day that build up to 25. A new site holds 50 credits while it builds and is charged for the work it took. What it does not use comes back, and a request that fails is not charged.

### Can I take my code elsewhere?

On a paid plan you can download the code written for your site as a zip, and your records as JSON or CSV. The zip does not include the shared parts every Briks site runs on, so it needs work to run elsewhere. On paid plans those files can also be kept in a GitHub repository, in step both ways.
