# Templates: start from a site and make it yours

A template is a finished site you can start from instead of a blank brief. Pick one, give Briks your business's details, and every page is rewritten for your business before it is published. This page covers browsing and previewing templates, making one yours, saving your own sites as templates and making one public for others.

## Where to find templates

Templates are in two places, and they lead to the same steps.

- **The \[templates gallery\](/templates) on briks.dev**, open to anyone. Filter by **Websites** or **Apps**, pick an industry or search for a business or a page, like bakery or booking. Each template has a page of its own with pictures, **What's included**, **Who it suits**, a **Preview** button and **Use this template**.
- **Templates in the studio's sidebar**. It has three sections: your workspace's own templates, **By Briks Team** and **Community Templates**. Each card shows a picture of the first screen, the name, who made it and when, what it is for, its rating and a **Use template** button. Once the workspace has templates of its own, Home shows up to four of them under **Start from a template**, with **All templates** beside it.

## Preview a template

On a template's page on briks.dev, **Preview** opens the template as a real, working site in a new tab, at its own address on briks.live. Click around it as a visitor would: open the menu, try it on your phone, read the inner pages. What you see is what you start from, before your details go in.

## Start a project from a template

1. Choose Use this template

   Where: briks.dev template page

If you are signed out, you sign up or sign in first. Either way you land on **Templates** in the studio with that template's steps already open. In the studio you can start the same way with **Use template** on any card.

2. Name the project

   Where: New project from

The first window, **New project from** and the template's name, asks for a **Project name**. If you belong to several workspaces, pick one under **Workspace**. Choose **Next**.

3. Tell Briks about your business

   Where: Make it yours

Only **Business name** is needed. The rest is optional: **What it does**, **Email**, **Phone**, **Address**, **Links** (separate them with commas) and **Anything else**. A social profile you do not give is taken off the site.

4. Decide about pictures

   Where: Make it yours

Under **Pictures**, **Keep these** leaves them as they are. **Fit my business** replaces the pictures that show the other business's own things with ones that suit yours.

5. Start it

   Where: Make it yours

Choose **Make it mine**. Or choose **Copy it as it is** to take the template unchanged and make it yours later. The new project opens in the studio and is published as a preview at its own address.

Making it yours rewrites the words, contact details, names and links of the business the template was made for. The layout, sections and look stay as they are. On a workspace's own templates, the first window offers **Create project** (a copy as it is) and **Make it yours first**.

Credits and room on your plan

**Make it mine** holds 5 credits while it works, as a change does, and a copy as it is holds 5, as a site check does. Each is charged for the work it takes and the rest goes back. A template makes a new project, so your plan needs room for one more: on Free, which includes 1 project, a second one opens the upgrade window on **Make room for your next project**.

Copied a template as it is and now want it to be yours? While the site still shows the original business's details, the studio shows a note above the chat, "This site still shows the details of the business it was made from", with a **Make it yours** button that opens the same form.

Making a template yours A dog groomer in Cardiff

> Business name: `Tidy Paws Grooming`. What it does: `Dog grooming and nail trims in Canton, by appointment`. Email, phone and address filled in, links to Instagram only, and **Fit my business** under Pictures.

The new site keeps the template's layout and look. Every page now names Tidy Paws, the contact details are hers, the template's Facebook link is gone because she gave only Instagram, and pictures of the old business's own things are replaced with ones that suit a groomer.

## Save your own site as a template

Any published project can become a template for your workspace, so the team can start new projects from it. Owners, Admins and Editors can save one.

Where

1. Projects
2. Your project
3. Settings
4. General
5. Save as template

1. Choose Save as template

   Where: Project settings

It is in the project's settings, or in the ••• menu on the project's row in **Projects**. The project has to be published first, because a template is made from the published version.

2. Name and describe it

   Where: Save as template

Give a **Template name** and, if you like, a line under **What it is for**, such as "A one-page site for a dental practice: services, prices, booking."

3. Save it

   Where: Templates

Choose **Save template**. Its card shows **Saving** and "Saving the version and taking its picture…". It is ready in a minute or so.

A template is frozen: later changes to the project never reach it. Owners and Admins can change its name and description with **Edit details** in its ••• menu, or **Delete** it. Projects already made from a template keep everything they were given.

## Make a template public

Owners and Admins can share one of the workspace's templates with everyone on Briks.

1. Choose Make public

   Where: Templates

Open the template's ••• menu in your workspace's section and choose **Make public**. The window explains what happens, including what it can earn.

2. Send it for review

   Where: Make public

Choose **Send for review**. The card is tagged **Waiting for review**. You can pull it back with **Withdraw from review**.

3. Approved or not

   Where: Templates

Once approved, it is tagged **Public · Community Templates** and is listed for everyone, with a page of its own and a preview on briks.dev. If it is not approved, it is tagged **Not approved** with the reason, and **Ask again to make it public** sends it back.

- Its pages, words, pictures and contact details go with it. Secrets and stored records never do.
- On community cards the maker is shown as **Community**, not your name or your workspace's.
- **Make private** takes it off the public lists at any time. Projects already made from it keep what they were given.

Tip

Since the contact details travel with a public template, it is worth saving it from a project whose details you are happy for others to see, or one you have already replaced with sample details.

## Ratings and what your templates earn

Anyone who started a project from a public template can rate it from 1 to 5 stars with **Rate it** on its card, and change their rating later. People in the template's own workspace cannot rate it. Each public card shows its average and how many have rated it, or **No ratings yet**.

When someone outside your workspace builds from one of your community templates, your workspace earns credits: 5 on their first paid build, and 10% of what their project spends in its first 30 days. Each reward is paid after 48 hours, up to 200 credits a month for each project made from it. A template rated under 3 stars on average by 5 or more people earns nothing while it stays there, and its card says: Not earning credits while it is rated under 3 stars on average. Earnings show on the template's card, such as Earned 12.50 credits from other people's builds, and on Billing.

### Does using a template cost more than starting from a brief?

**Make it mine** holds 5 credits and a copy as it is holds 5, against 50 for a new project from a brief. Each is charged what the work takes.

### Do domains, form messages or analytics come with a template?

No, never. A template brings the site, not its history.

### Can I edit a template after saving it?

Only its name and description. To change the site in it, change the project, publish, and save a new template.
