# Storage: files your project keeps

Storage is where a project keeps files that aren't part of its design: a price list you link to, files visitors send through the site, documents your team needs. This page explains what goes there, how much room each plan has, and every view and setting of the Storage tab.

## What storage is for

- **Files you upload** for the project: a PDF menu, a brochure, a set of exercise sheets.
- **Files visitors send through the site,** when a feature takes them, such as a CV with a job application. They land in a folder of their own here.
- **Downloads for your visitors.** Put files in a public folder and your site serves them at its own address.

Everything is private unless its folder is made public.

## How much room you have

| Plan | Storage |
| --- | --- |
| Free | 500 MB |
| Starter | 5 GB |
| Pro | 10 GB |
| Studio | 25 GB |
| Agency | 100 GB |

That's one allowance for the whole workspace, not per project. It covers the [media library](https://briks.dev/docs/media-library), every project's files, the pictures each site shows, each project's database and its backups (nightly database copies and saved versions of the code).

On Free, the 500 MB allowance is the real ceiling. A single file may be up to 2 GB, and a video in the media library up to 250 MB, but neither fits if the workspace has less room than that left. A site's own pictures take part of the allowance before you upload anything.

When it's full

New uploads stop, in the studio and on your site. In the studio you'll see that the upload would go over your plan's storage. Visitors uploading through the site are told it has used all the storage its plan allows. To move to a larger plan, an Owner opens **Billing**.

## Find it

Where

1. Projects
2. Your project
3. Storage

The tab has three views: **Files**, **Usage** and **Settings**.

| Role | What they can do |
| --- | --- |
| Viewer | Browse, open, copy links and download |
| Editor | All of that, plus upload, make folders, rename, move and delete |
| Admin and Owner | All of that, plus make folders public or private, and empty storage |

## Upload and organise files

1. Open the right folder

   Where: Files

Click a folder to open it. The trail above the list, starting at **Files**, takes you back up.

2. Upload

   Where: Upload

Click **Upload**, or drop files anywhere on the list. They go up three at a time, each with a progress bar. Each file can be up to 2 GB.

3. Make a folder

   Where: New folder

Give it a **Name** and click **Make folder**. New folders are private.

4. Tidy up

   Where: Row menu

The menu at the end of each row has **Open**, then **Copy link** for a file or **Download as .zip** for a folder, then **Rename**, **Move** and **Delete**. Tick several rows to **Move** or **Delete** them together.

- Folders can't be dropped. Make the folder with **New folder**, open it, then drop the files inside.
- Names can use letters, digits, spaces and a few punctuation marks. Slashes, colons, percent signs, hashes, question marks and quotes aren't allowed.
- The search box (**Search in Files**, or in the open folder) finds names containing what you type, in that folder and the ones inside it.
- Deleting a folder deletes everything in it, and it can't be undone.

## Share a file

**Copy link** in a file's menu makes a link. For a private file it works for one hour, for anyone who has it. For a file in a public folder, the link lasts. **Open** shows the file in a new tab: pictures, videos, audio, PDFs and plain text open in the browser, and other files download.

## Public folders

1. Open the folder's menu

   Where: Files

Only folders can be public, and only Owners and Admins see **Make public**.

2. Confirm

   Where: Make public?

Everything in it, now and later, can be opened by anyone at your site's address under `/files/` and the folder's name.

3. Link to it

   Where: Studio

Ask for a button or link on a page, or paste the address wherever you need it.

A public folder A physiotherapy clinic's exercise sheets

> Ridgeway Physio makes a folder called handouts public, uploads knee-exercises.pdf, then asks in the Studio: On the Knee pain page, add a button that says Download your exercises, linking to `/files/handouts/knee-exercises.pdf`.

Patients download the sheet from the clinic's own address. Renaming or moving the file breaks that link, so leave it where it is once it's live.

**Make private**, in the folder's menu or in **Settings**, closes it again. A site last published before public files existed serves them after its next publish.

## Usage

**Usage** shows **Files** (how many), **Stored in this project** and **Plan storage used** against your allowance. **Where the plan's storage goes** breaks the workspace's total into **This project's files**, **Other projects' files**, **Media library**, **Site pictures**, **Databases**, **Backups** and what's **Left**. Below that, **Largest folders** and **Largest files** show what to clear first.

Free up space

1. See where it went

   Where: Usage

Read **Where the plan's storage goes**. If **This project's files** is small, the space is elsewhere: another project's files, the media library, or a database.

2. Find the big files

   Where: Largest files

Each file's folder is a link. Click it to open that folder in **Files**.

3. Keep a copy first

   Where: Download

If you might need the files again, download the folder as a .zip before you delete anything. Deleting can't be undone.

4. Delete

   Where: Files

Tick the files you no longer need and click **Delete**. The space comes back straight away, and **Usage** shows the new total when you open it again.

Good to know

Deleting an item from the media library frees its storage: open its **Details** and press **Delete**. Sites using it on their pages keep their own copy.

## Settings

- **Download as a .zip:** every file or one folder, keeping the folders. Up to 10,000 files and 2 GB at a time; for more, download folder by folder.
- **Public folders:** each public folder with its address, and **Make private** for Owners and Admins.
- **Empty storage**, under **Danger zone:** deletes every file and folder in the project's storage and makes nothing public. Owners and Admins type the project's name to confirm. Links to the files stop working.

## Storage, the media library and File Explorer

| Place | What it holds | Use it for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Media library | Pictures and videos for the whole workspace | Placing on any project's pages from the prompt box |
| Storage tab | Any kind of file, for one project | Downloads, documents and files visitors send |
| Settings, File Explorer | The code written for the site | Reading or editing the site's own files |

File Explorer isn't storage at all: it's your site's code, covered in [Your site's code](https://briks.dev/docs/code).

### Do the pictures on my site count towards storage?

Yes, under **Site pictures** on the Usage view, along with the media library, databases and backups.

### Can visitors see my private files?

No. A private file opens only through a link you make, and that link lasts an hour.

### Is there a limit per project?

No separate one. Every project draws on the workspace's single allowance.

### Are the files in storage backed up?

Not yet. **Settings**, **Backups**, **Storage** says snapshots of a project's own files arrive later. Until then, keep a copy of anything important with **Download as a .zip** (see [Backups](https://briks.dev/docs/backups)).
