# Your site's briks.live address

Every project gets its own address at briks.live as soon as it is created, such as crumb.briks.live. This page explains where the name comes from, which names are allowed, how to change it and how it sits alongside a domain of your own.

## How the name is chosen

Briks makes the address from the **Business or project name** you give when you [start a new project](https://briks.dev/docs/new-project). It turns capitals into lowercase, turns spaces and symbols into single hyphens and keeps the first 40 characters. “Harbour Lane Dental” becomes `harbour-lane-dental.briks.live`, and “Crumb & Co” becomes `crumb-co.briks.live`.

- If another site already has the name, four random characters are added, such as `crumb-co-3f9a`.
- If the name is one Briks keeps for itself, `-site` is added, so “Help” becomes `help-site`.
- If no plain letters or numbers are left (a name written entirely in another script, for example), the address starts from `site`.
- Accented letters can split a word: “Crème Brûlée Bakery” becomes `cre-me-bru-le-e-bakery`. If that happens, change the address before you share it.

Renaming the project later does not change its address. Only **Change address** does.

### Picking a good name

- Keep it short and close to the business name. You will type it, read it out on the phone and paste it into messages while you share previews.
- Leave out words that add nothing, such as “official”, “website” or the year.
- Avoid names that only make sense to you, like a project code. Clients you send the preview to see the address before they see the site.

## Where to find it

Where

1. Projects
2. Your project
3. Settings
4. Domain

The **Address** group at the top of the **Domain** section shows the **Site address**, a **Preview** or **In production** tag once it has been published, and when it was last published. Beside it is the site's state (**Live**, **Building**, **Needs attention** or **Draft**) and an **Open the site** button that opens it in a new tab.

## Rules for a new address

When you choose a name yourself, it has to follow these rules. Capitals are turned into lowercase for you. The dialog checks most rules as you type and shows the message from the right-hand column; whether another site already has the name is checked when you confirm.

| Rule | What the dialog says |
| --- | --- |
| 3 to 40 characters | Use 3 to 40 characters. |
| Only the letters a to z, numbers and hyphens, starting and ending with a letter or number | Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, starting and ending with a letter or number. |
| No two hyphens together | Use one hyphen at a time. |
| Not a name Briks keeps, and not starting with `template-` | That address is kept for Briks. Choose another. |
| Not already used by another site | That address is taken. Choose another. |

Names starting with `template-` are kept, and so are `template` and `templates`, because template previews live at addresses like `creative-studio.template.briks.live`. Briks also keeps names people would take for its own, so nobody can pass a site off as part of Briks: `about`, `abuse`, `account`, `accounts`, `admin`, `agents`, `api`, `app`, `assets`, `auth`, `autoconfig`, `autodiscover`, `beta`, `billing`, `blog`, `bot`, `briks`, `catalog`, `catalogue`, `cdn`, `checkout`, `collect`, `console`, `contact`, `dashboard`, `demo`, `dev`, `dns`, `docs`, `download`, `downloads`, `edge`, `email`, `emails`, `example`, `files`, `fonts`, `ftp`, `hello`, `help`, `hooks`, `hostmaster`, `images`, `imap`, `img`, `info`, `ingress`, `internal`, `invalid`, `invoices`, `legal`, `localhost`, `login`, `logout`, `mail`, `marketplace`, `mcp`, `media`, `motion`, `mx`, `news`, `noc`, `ns1`, `ns2`, `oauth`, `official`, `ops`, `password`, `pay`, `payments`, `pop`, `postmaster`, `preview`, `pricing`, `privacy`, `register`, `relay`, `root`, `runtime`, `sales`, `security`, `sftp`, `shop`, `signin`, `signup`, `smtp`, `ssh`, `sso`, `staging`, `static`, `status`, `store`, `studio`, `support`, `system`, `team`, `telegram`, `terms`, `test`, `updates`, `verify`, `vpn`, `webhooks`, `webmail`, `webmaster`, `www`.

## Change the address

Owners and Admins can change it. Editors and Viewers see the same row with the line “Owners and Admins can change it.”

1. Open the Domain section

   Where: Settings, Domain

Open your project, click the **Settings** tab, then **Domain**.

2. Press Change address

   Where: Address

In the **Change the address** row, press **Change address**.

3. Type the new name

   Where: Change the site address

Type it in **New address**. The full address shows underneath as you type, such as `crumbandco.briks.live`, with any problem shown beneath it.

4. Confirm

   Where: Change the site address

If the site has never been published, press **Change address** and it changes at once. If it has been published, read the warning in the dialog and press **Move the site**.

5. Wait for the move

   Where: Studio

Briks takes you to the studio while it builds the site for the new address and publishes it there. As the dialog says, “The site is published again at the new address in a minute or two, with nothing else changed.” A message confirms the move.

A move runs no AI and uses no credits. It cannot start while a build, a change or an A/B test is running; the dialog says which, and you can try again once it has finished.

## What happens to the old address

It stops working. Briks does not forward visitors from the old address to the new one. The dialog warns you before you confirm: “The old address, crumb.briks.live, stops working as soon as the move is done. Links to it, and anything shared with it, will no longer reach the site.” Once you have moved, the old name is free, so another site could take it.

Things to update after a move

Links you have shared (printed cards, social posts, emails to clients). Secrets you entered yourself: they stay with the old address, so enter them again under **Settings**, **Secrets**; the message after the move names each one (see [Secrets](https://briks.dev/docs/secrets)). Anything outside Briks that calls your site at its old address.

Your own domains move with the site, so you do not need to touch their records. In the rare case one cannot be moved, the message after the move says so, and the old address keeps working for that domain until support moves it across. [Scheduled tasks](https://briks.dev/docs/crons) aimed at your site's own paths follow the new address by themselves.

Example A florist tidying up an awkward address

> Blume & Stiel, a florist in Bristol, started its project with the name “Blume & Stiel Florist”, so its address came out as `blume-stiel-florist.briks.live`. Before sending the preview to her business partner, the owner opened **Domain**, pressed **Change address**, typed `blume` and pressed **Move the site**.

A couple of minutes later the site was live at blume.briks.live with nothing else changed. Nobody had the old link yet, so nothing needed updating.

## Your address and your own domain

The briks.live address stays in place even after you connect a domain of your own, and visitors can reach the site at either. Once your domain shows **Live**, the site names it as its main address: the sitemap, shared links and the notes that tell search engines which copy counts all point to your domain. A tidy briks.live name matters most while you are sharing previews; after launch, most people only ever see your domain (see [Connect your domain](https://briks.dev/docs/custom-domains)).

### Can I choose the address when I create the project?

It is made from the project's name. Pick a short, clear name when you start, or change the address afterwards under **Domain**.

### Can I get the old name back?

Yes, if no other site has taken it in the meantime. Change the address back the same way.

### Does changing the address change my domain's records?

No. Your domains move with the site and keep the same records.
